Using dividers without breaking the layout
A divider separates parts of a bio or post — links from intro, rules from welcome text. Keep it shorter than about 20 characters so it doesn’t wrap onto a second line on narrow phones; everything on this page is sized for that.
Line characters like ━ and ─ are wider than letters in many fonts, so a divider that fits on desktop can still wrap on a phone. Preview on your phone before you post.
- Pick a dividerMatch it to your symbols — hearts, stars or ribbons.
- Copy and paste on its own linePress Return before and after so it sits alone.
- Check on mobileIf it wraps, delete a couple of line characters.
Screen readers read every character, so “━━━━━━” can be announced as “heavy horizontal” many times. Shorter dividers are kinder to listeners.
Instagram tip: line breaks in bios are kept when you type them in the app. Very long dividers count toward the bio’s character limit.
Questions, answered
What’s the difference between dividers and borders?
Dividers are short breaks between sections. Borders (on the Border Symbols page) are full-width lines and box frames.
Why does my divider wrap onto two lines?
Box-drawing lines are wide in some fonts. Remove a few characters until it fits on one line on your phone.
Can I use dividers in Discord channel names?
Short ones like ┃ or ・ work in channel names; longer dividers belong in channel topics and messages.
