Why some letters don’t shrink
Unicode never planned a full tiny alphabet — these characters come from phonetics and maths. That leaves gaps:
- Superscript covers every lowercase letter, but q is a look-alike (ᑫ) and capitals are converted to lowercase.
- Subscript has no letters for b, c, d, f, g, q, w, y or z — they stay full size.
- Small caps covers almost everything; q and x are near-matches.
Numbers 0–9 exist in both superscript and subscript.
- TypeLowercase gives the most even result.
- Pick the style with fewest gapsSmall caps is the most complete.
- CopyPaste and check the size in your app.
Accessibility: these letters are maths and symbol characters, not a font. Screen readers may spell them out letter by letter or skip them, and search inside apps may not match them. Keep important words — your name, a business name, a call to action — in plain text too.
Questions, answered
Why are some letters still big?
Unicode has no small version of them. Subscript is missing the most letters; small caps the fewest.
Is small text the same as a smaller font size?
No — it’s different characters. Apps that let you change font size will still do it better.
Can I use small text in Discord?
Yes, it pastes as normal text. Discord also has its own -# markdown for small subtext in messages.
