Making checklists in plain text
For a to-do list in a notes app, email or caption, start each line with ☐ and swap it for ☑ when it’s done. For pass/fail lists, ✓ and ✗ keep a neutral look; ✅ and ❌ are bright emoji.
Mac keyboard symbols (⌘ ⌥ ⇧ ⌃) are useful when writing shortcuts in documentation: ⌘ C to copy.
- Pick a markerCheck, box or bullet.
- CopyTap to copy.
- Start each line with itAdd a space after the marker for readability.
Accessibility: screen readers announce ✓ as “check mark”, but ☐ may be read as “ballot box” — not “unchecked”. For forms and important lists, use real checkboxes or words like “done”.
Questions, answered
What is the most compatible check mark?
✓ (U+2713) and ✔ (U+2714) display almost everywhere. ✅ is an emoji and varies by device.
How do I make a clickable checkbox?
Copied symbols are just text. For clickable boxes, use your app’s checklist feature (e.g. Notes, Google Docs).
Where did the © and math symbols go?
They live on the Classic Symbols page now, so this page can focus on checks, shapes and bullets.
