Text hearts vs. heart emoji

Hearts like ♡, ❥ and ღ are ordinary characters: they take the colour and weight of the text around them, so they look calm in a bio or display name. Heart emoji such as 💗 carry their own colours and look different on iPhone, Android and Windows.

Why does ❤ sometimes become ❤️? The red heart exists as one character that apps may draw either way. An invisible “variation selector” after it asks for one look: the emoji version (❤️) includes it, and “Red Heart (forced text)” asks for the plain version. Some apps ignore the request, so check after pasting.

  1. Pick a styleUse text hearts for a minimal look, emoji hearts for colour.
  2. CopyTap the card — it turns green when the heart is on your clipboard.
  3. Paste and checkLook at the result on your profile, because each app renders hearts slightly differently.

Newer emoji can show as a box. Emoji are added to Unicode every year, and phones only display the ones their software knows. The pink 🩷, grey 🩶 and light blue 🩵 hearts were added in 2022. If someone on an older phone sees an empty box or a question mark, swap in an older emoji.

Screen readers read hearts by name, e.g. “white heart suit”. One heart reads fine; a row of ten gets read ten times.

Questions, answered

What is the difference between ♡ and ♥?

They are two separate Unicode characters from the playing-card suits: ♡ is the outlined (“white”) heart suit and ♥ is the filled (“black”) heart suit. Both take your text colour.

Why does my heart look different after I post it?

The app draws the heart with its own font. Emoji hearts vary most, because Apple, Google, Samsung and Microsoft each design their own emoji.

Which hearts work in usernames?

Most handles (the @name) only allow letters, numbers, periods and underscores, so hearts won’t be accepted there. Use them in your display name or bio instead.
