Display name vs. username
Most apps have two names: a unique username or handle (@nova.k) and a display name shown on your profile. Symbols almost always work in display names and almost never in usernames.
| Platform | Username / handle | Display name |
|---|---|---|
| Letters, numbers, . and _ only | Symbols allowed | |
| TikTok | Letters, numbers, . and _ only | Symbols allowed |
| Discord | Lowercase letters, numbers, . and _ only | Symbols allowed |
| X (Twitter) | Letters, numbers and _ only | Symbols allowed |
Rules as of October 2026 — platforms change these, so check the app if something is rejected.
- Pick a frame or accentFrames go around the name; accents go after it.
- Copy and paste into the display name fieldNot the username field.
- Keep the name readableFriends should still recognise you at a glance.
Searchability: people search for your name as plain text. Heavy styling — especially fancy fonts — can make you harder to find.
Questions, answered
What is ꧁ ꧂?
Ornamental marks from the Javanese script, used as a decorative frame around names.
Why won’t the app accept my name with symbols?
You’re probably editing the username/handle. Try the display name field instead.
What’s the difference between this page and Gaming Name Symbols?
This page is for everyday display names. Gaming Name Symbols covers clan tags and gamer-style marks.
